Note : Another one of the early 90s rash of video game film adaptations, much like Super Mario Bros., it plays fast and loose with the source material, while mixing in all sorts of stuff that was trendy at the time, or that The Kids Like, such as a cyberpunk/postapocalyptic setting filled with mohawked, tattooed weirdos, people transforming into rubber-suited monsters, some early-90s "high-tech" computer interfaces, and a weird fixation on Alyssa Milano's ass, which is, admittedly, quite nice. The cast of this strange mess includes a number of well-known genre film actors, most notably Robert Patrick playing Guy Fieri as a evil CEO/martial arts wizard, Mark Dacascos and Scott Wolf as the Lee brothers, and B-movie icons Al Leong, Michael Berryman, and Vincent Klyn in smaller roles. It's not good by any definition of the term, but it's pretty goofily entertaining cheese, and even more so with either of the two riff commentaries.
After a huge earthquake has devastated southern California, what's left of Los Angeles is named New Angeles, and is a kind of half-devastated slum with little to no resources and ongoing environmental hazards. Evil businessman Koga Shuko is searching for a mystical medallion known as the Double Dragon, of which he has managed to procure one half, and he sends out his henchmen to find the other. Teenagers Billy and Jimmy Lee, so upbeat they're probably on huge doses of ritalin, are on their way home from a martial arts tournament when they get ambushed by Mad Max thugs and saved by a plucky group of kids in pastel outfits called the Power Corps, lead by Marian, the police chief's daughter. Billy holds the other part of the medallion, and Shuko transforms Bo Adobo, the leader of the thugs, into a weird rubber monster for failing to steal it. Some other shit also happens. Look, it's just a movie.
A pretty decent transfer, not entirely clean, but good color and contrast, decent detail, and ok grain. The original stereo sounds fine too, and the riff commentaries are what you need to watch this.
