The Car

Horror Mystery Suspense

The film is set in the fictional Utah community of Santa Ynez, which is being terrorized by a mysterious black coupe that appears out of nowhere and begins running people down. After the car kills off the town's Sheriff (John Marley), it becomes the job of Captain Wade Parent (James Brolin) to stop the murderous driver.

Note : Just like "Die Hard in an X" was the formula for a fair chunk of action movies in the second half of the 80s, "Jaws but an X" was the formula for horror movies in the second half of the 70s and into the 80s (see also Razorback, Alligator, Slugs, Piranha, Rats, etc.), but this has to be one of the weirder ones, "Jaws but a car". Yeah, Duel did the "menacing motor vehicle and we never see the driver" first, but this takes it a few steps further, implying the car is actually autonomous (full self driving, just like Elon promised) and also demonic. It's actually pretty decently put together, with some tense sequences, nice scenery, and an appropriately evil-looking car, although it runs out of gas after a while. Generally pretty good cast includes James Brolin, Kathleen Lloyd, John Marley, and a young Ronny Cox, playing a good guy for once.

A pair of cyclists are menaced and then killed by a heavily customized black car, and when the same car kills a hitchhiker in a nearby desert town, the local sheriff and his men try to track it down. However, eyewitness accounts insist the car had no driver, and it soon shows up again, killing the sheriff, and leaving Chief Deputy Wade Parent in charge. Although the cops try to get people to stay at home, the local school holds a marching band exercise which goes hilariously wrong when the evil car shows up, but they learn one piece of useful (and ominous) information: The car won't enter the church grounds. As the cat and mouse game between the cops and the car escalates, the body count rises in increasingly improbable ways, until Wade has no choice but to try to set a trap.

This is a pretty decent remaster for what it is, nothing fancy, but very watchable, with decent color and contrast, reasonable grain, and ok detail. Stereo track sounds fine, commentary track is interesting enough.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk techno horror” for more machines, technology, and other supposedly human creations turning on us, “hevk supernatural” for more things not explainable by science or logic, or “hevk 70s” for more from the decade when Spielberg set the tone, and the rest followed.
