Note : Here's a very recent film, and a slapstick comedy at that, so kind of outside my wheelhouse in general, but I thought this was so wonderfully strange that I had to encode it. It's a period story about a beaver trapper and his search for riches and love, it was shot on a shoestring budget, and looks like it was mostly put together in post in After Effects, with a mixture of live action, fairly crude animation, and blown-out black and white grain filters. Oh, and all the animals are played by just people in mascot costumes. The surprisingly decent cast includes Ryland Brickson Cole Tews, Olivia Graves, Doug Mancheski, Wes Tank, and Luis Rico. The screwy gag a minute format won't be for everyone, but if you like silent film comedies a la Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, combined with, uh, video game style questing, this might well work for you.
Jean Kayak is a successful applejack producer who's ruined when a beaver eats one of the support struts on a giant keg, which rolls into his house and explodes when it comes into contact with the fire in the fireplace. When he regains consciousness, it's winter, and tries without success to find food, at one point being bested by a pair of beavers. Finally, he catches fish using his own bleeding fingers as bait, and when he's selling the fish to the local merchant, he notices a fur trapper making a lot of money, so he decides to get in on the game. He graduates from rabbits to raccoons, and is taken on as an apprentice by the trapper, but when wolves attack and the trapper is killed, Jean sets his sight on bigger game: Beavers. As it happens, the merchant's very attractive daughter has a thing for Jean, but the merchant wants hundreds of beaver pelts before he will let anyone marry her, and the beavers have plans of their own, and won't come peacefully.
This film has a very peculiar look, with lots of grain and fake grime, so I went for a pretty high bitrate to preserve it all (although I might have gone a little bit overboard). It looks good, though, and this encode is indistinguishable from the original Blu-Ray. 5.1 track also sounds fine, and the commentary track is as amusing and off-kilter as you'd expect from the kind of people who made this movie.
