Infohash : C996FDF06C7EA67243BC5C6A7EF98B299F413B3C

Der Todesking (1990), directed by Jörg Buttgereit, Arrow remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including original German theatrical stereo, commentary track, and English subtitles.

IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098486/

Video encoded in two-pass 14.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image. Audio encoded separately with Apple AAC for the highest-quality AAC sound available. Subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned.

Note : If you're in the mood for a Teutonic depress-a-thon, your first stop should be Jörg Buttgereit, and in this, his second feature film, he gives his experimental instincts free reign, casting off the single linear narrative restraints of Nekromantik, and I think it's a better film for it. None of the vignettes here would have sustained a feature on their own, and if they were separate short films, it wouldn't have been such a drawn-out sad affair. As it is, it really does work quite well, with melancholy, hopeless tone, the ultra-grotty low-fi aesthetics, and the minimal but functional performances all leaving you with an awful hollow feeling at the end. Feel-bad cinema at its best.

In between shots of a slowly decomposing corpse, we get seven short stories named after the days of the week: A man comes home, call his boss to resign from his job, writes a number of letters, and commits suicide by taking pills in his bathtub. A man rents a Nazisploitation movie and excitedly watches its castration scene at home, but when his girlfriend arrives and nags at him, he shoots her in the head and frames the splatter of gore on the wall. A man and a woman meet on a park bench in the rain, the man confesses to having killed his wife, and the woman pulls out a gun to shoot him, but when she can't, he does it himself. Shots of a motorway bridge are superimposed with the names, ages and occupations of people who killed themselves jumping off it. A woman spies at a young couple in  her building, then gets a chain letter urging her to kill herself. She ignores it, but later we see the young couple actually did commit suicide. A young woman with a film camera and a gun kills several people at a concert, until someone kills her in turn. A young man distressed in his bed bangs his head repeatedly on the wall until he dies.

The original material has its own, not very high quality aesthetic, I think this is shot on Super 8 again, and this remaster is probably as good as any transfer is going to get. Stereo track is fine, commentary track as usual interesting and more lighthearted than you'd expect.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk experimental” for more intentional transgression of the norms and rules of regula cinema, “hevk gore” for more goop and blood, or “hevk 90s” for more from the decade when Germany was a hotbed of artistic experimentation.
