Railway historian Tim Dunn (The Architecture The Railways Built) teams up with Siddy Holloway from the London Transport Museum to explore the disused parts of London's tube network, from abandoned stations to redundant tunnels and lifts, often hidden right under passengers' noses.
Episode 8: Stockwell
The current Stockwell Tube station, a big box of a building, is no beauty, but that doesn’t stop Tim Dunn and Siddy Holloway enthusing over its 1970s tiling designed by Abram Games, its 19th-century ventilation shaft and the sidings accessed by the “thinnest door” on the underground. As Siddy lurks in one of the station’s dusty, dark tunnels, she tells us
she doubts she’ll ever tire of the underground’s hidden spaces: “This is one of the oldest parts… and it’s still beautiful,” she explains. Hmm. Meanwhile, Tim gets busy discovering how Transport for London is reacting to climate change, and we hear how the Docklands Light Railway was built in the 1980s.
