Note : There's not much to say about this film that hasn't already been said, I think. While the first Dead film founded the modern zombie genre, this one shaped it irrevocably, setting up the pattern to be followed all the way until 28 Days Later popularized fast zombies (although Nightmare City did it first), not to mention setting off the entire Italian zombie subgenre, half of which pretends to be sequels to this (and the other half is mostly porn). It's a classic of classics, much imitated, never surpassed. The excellent core cast consists of Ken Foree, Gaylen Ross, David Emge, and Scott Reiniger, and there's of course a memorable small acting appearance by the film's SFX designer Tom Savini. If you haven't seen it, you need to, and if you have, see it again.

As a zombie apocalypse rages across the United States, millions of people have died and reanimated as zombies, and the problem is biggest in the cities. Traffic reporter Stephen Andrews and his girlfriend Fran Parker, who both work at a Philadelphia TV station, plan to steal the station's helicopter to escape. Across town, two SWAT team cops, Roger DeMarco and Peter Washington, are having trouble as they try to fight zombies in a housing project where tenants have defied martial law and refused to turn their dead over to the National Guard, and racist cops attack indiscriminately. Disillusioned, they decide to desert, and join Stephen, who's a friend of Roger, in trying to escape the city. The four end up at a shopping mall, which they meticulously clear of zombies and seal up, creating a hidden safe room, and enjoying the creature comforts of the mall's various stores. Their peace is short lived, however, as first Roger is bitten and slowly succumbs to infection, and later, a group of bikers invading their sanctuary creates chaos.

For all its qualities, this was never a beautiful looking film, with its kind of flat lighting, grainy film stock, and chaotic framing. It contributes to the verité feel, but it's nothing to write home about aesthetically, so this 4k remaster is about as good as it gets, clear and fairly sharp, with decent contrast and color, and quite a bit of grain. The 5.1 and stereo remasters sound quite good, the original mono is there if you want the original experience, and both commentary tracks are very good and interesting.
