Witchfinder General

Drama History Horror

England is torn in civil strife as the Royalists battle the Parliamentary Party for control. This conflict distracts people from rational thought and allows unscrupulous men to gain local power by exploiting village superstitions. One of these men is Matthew Hopkins, who tours the land offering his services as a persecutor of witches.

Note : One of the "Unholy Trinity" of British folk horror, the originators of the genre, along with The Blood on Satan's Claw and The Wicker Man, this is a deeply nihilistic story about sadistic for-profit "Witchfinder" Matthew Hopkins (a real historical figure, but a lot of creative liberties are taken here), and a English Civil War soldier who swears to hunt him down and kill him, only to, well, you know how the whole "stare into the abyss" thing goes. Vincent Price hams it up just enough to sell his disagreeable role, the other actors are also quite good, Patrick Wymark from The Blood on Satan's Claw makes a small appearance as Cromwell. It's not particularly graphic, but it's really very brutal and unflinching, and the accused "witches" show some quite genuine-seeming terror before being summarily put to death. Other cast includes Ian Ogilvy, Robert Russell, and Hilary Dwyer.

During the chaos of the English civil war, Matthew Hopkins takes it upon himself to claim he's been appointed "Witchfinder General" by parliament, and as such is tasked with rooting out sorcery and witchcraft across the realm. In reality, he and his assistant travel from town to town to torture confessions out of suspected witches, being paid by local magistrates to do so, and raping and stealing a bit along the way for good measure. Richard Marshall, a young soldier, is lauded after saving the life of his commanding officer, and goes to visit his lover Sara, obtaining the permission of her uncle, a priest, to marry her, however, her uncle wants her to leave the village as soon as possible, as they're not popular amongst the villagers. When Richard leaves to go back to the army, he crosses paths with Hopkins and his assistant, and gives them instructions on how to get to the village, where they promptly start torturing Sara's uncle, and only stop when Sara offers sexual favors to Hopkins. However, when Hopkins leaves, his assistant rapes Sara, and when Hopkins returns, he wants nothing more to do with Sara, and has her uncle and two other people killed before leaving. When Richard returns, he's shocked, and swears vengeance, but the price of revenge could be very high.

This 4k remaster is a nice upgrade over my previous encode, and my only real complaint is that saturation is still not very well managed, with overly loud reds in particular. Otherwise, it looks very nice, contrast and grain are both exemplary. Sound is good too, and the commentary tracks give plenty of information about the production and its doomed young director Michael Reeves, who died a few months after this film premiered.
