Note : This infamous flop was badly received by both critics and audiences, and there are several reasons: The plot is tepid and doesn't get started until a fair bit into the film, most of the cast, with the very notable exception of Liev Schreiber, seem to think they're in a much more serious movie than it actually is, and some of the early digital effects aren't great. It's still a pretty decent attempt at making some honest to God cosmic horror, though, some of the practical effects are fun, and there are a few fairly gruesome kills. All in all, worth watching, I think, especially if you like this kind of thing. Rest of the cast includes Ben Affleck, Peter O'Toole (who knows how they got him to be in this), Rose McGowan, and Joanna Going.
The Pailey sisters, Jennifer and Lisa, are arriving to the small town in Colorado where Jennifer works as a doctor. Arriving, they find the town uncannily empty, and soon stumble upon a few strangely mutilated corpses, and then run into the local sheriff and his two deputies, who are trying to figure out what's going on. They find the name "Timothy Flyte" written on a mirror, just before one deputy disappears, and a little later, the other, Stu Wargle, is killed by a giant moth creature that rips his face off. However, Lisa encounters a seemingly alive and unhurt Stu in the bathroom, and they find his body missing. The sheriff uses his contacts at the FBI to find Timothy Flyte, a scientist whose theory of "The Ancient Enemy" posits an explanation to historical mass disappearances and the fall of ancient civilizations. Indeed, the Scooby Gang is up against a blob-like ancient life form that periodically emerges from under ground to digest everything living, gaining memories and knowledge, and the ability to mimic its prey, in the process. It's time for goop and tentacles!
This Shout! Factory 4k remaster is quite good, though a bit grainy. Color and contrast is good, but the movie is at times very dark, which I think is intentional. The 5.1 track sounds fine, and I guess they couldn't get anyone to work up the interest to make a commentary track or anything.
