The Black Hole
The explorer craft U.S.S. Palomino is returning to Earth after a fruitless 18-month search for extra-terrestrial life when the crew comes upon a supposedly lost ship, the magnificent U.S.S. Cygnus, hovering near a black hole. The ship is controlled by Dr. Hans Reinhardt and his monstrous robot companion, Maximillian. But the initial wonderment and awe the Palomino crew feel for the ship and its resistance to the power of the black hole turn to horror as they uncover Reinhardt's plans.
The Black Hole (1979), directed by Gary Nelson, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including 5.1 remaster and English subtitles.

Note : How about if, in the aftermath of Star Wars' success, Disney made a movie that was part 2001: A Space Odyssey, part Event Horizon, but for kids, and cast a bunch of well-known genre actors to star in it, including Robert Forster, Maximilian Schell, Anthony Perkins, Ernest Borgnine, Yvette Mimieux, Tom McLoughlin, and the voices of Roddy McDowall and Slim Pickens as two overly-cute robots? Well, that sounds insane, but that's what Disney hath wrought, so here it is. Director Nelson is mostly otherwise sort of known for making the second of Cannon's two pretty wretched Quatermain films, so this was definitely the high point of his career. It's not entirely successful at what it tries to do, but it has a bunch of cool practical and optical effects and visuals, including some top of the line miniature work, an evil robot that's entirely too scary for kids, a nasty body horror reveal, and a bonkers, make what you want of it yourself ending.
A deep space exploration mission on the USS Palomino comes across the huge ship USS Cygnus, which has been missing for twenty years. It's sitting apparently unaffected impossibly close to a huge black hole, and for extra intrigue, the father of one of the Palomino crew members, Kate McCrae, was onboard when it went missing. After the Palomino is damaged by tidal forces around the black hole, they are forced to dock with the Cygnus, which has all of a sudden turned all the lights on. On board, they encounter Dr. Reinhardt, a famous scientist, who explains the ship was disabled by a meteor storm, and most of the crew abandoned it, but he and McCrae's father stayed behind, however, McCrae's father has since died. Reinhardt has built a crew of blank-faced, menacing robots to replace the people on the ship, and has spent 20 years researching the black hole, becoming convinced it's possible to fly through it and come out the other side. However, not all is as it seems, the robot crew might be something more sinister, and Reinhardt's main robot buddy Maximillian has a disturbing complement of motorized power tools and cutlery. As things get complicated and disaster strikes, several people will finally get first hand experience of what lies beyond the black hole.
This is a decent but not amazing remaster, with ok grain structure, reasonable detail, and fine color and contrast. There's nothing overly bad about it, but it does feel a little fuzzy. The 5.1 remaster is pretty good, though. I could have wished for a commentary track or two, especially about the effects, but maybe next time. Note that this version includes the overture at the beginning, in other words, the film's score begins a couple of minute before the image. This is intentional.
