Curse of the Crimson Altar

Horror Mystery

When his brother disappears, Robert Manning pays a visit to the remote country house he was last heard from. While his host is outwardly welcoming - and his niece more demonstrably so - Manning detects a feeling of menace in the air with the legend of Lavinia Morley, Black Witch of Greymarsh, hanging over everything.

Note : It's not every day you get Christopher Lee, Boris Karloff, and Barbara Steele in a psychedelic 60s adaptation of Lovecraft's Dreams in the Witch House, and with Michael Gough, Mark Eden, and Virginia Wetherell thrown in for extra British actor power, but that's exactly what this is. It sounds wonderful on paper, although it doesn't quite come together, mostly because of a somewhat muddled script. On the other hand, it has a fair bit of nudity for its time, including a sex scene, a hippie party that's straight out of Sergio Martino's fantasies, incredibly psychedelic optical caleidoscope effects, and a recurring green, white, and red light effect that I can only assume is a cunning reference to Lovecraft's greatest fear, Italians.

Robert Manning returns to his family's origins, the town of Greymarsh, looking for his missing brother. He arrives at Craxted Lodge, where he finds a wild party going on, and he's invited to stay by Eve, the owner's niece. He dreams of bizarre human sacrifice, and the next morning, he asks the owner, Morley, about his brother, but he's told he's never been there. Manning's strange dreams turn into hallucinations, and elderly scholar of the occult professor Marsh tells him that Morley's ancestor Lavinia was the head of a strange witch cult. After Manning cunningly gets Eve on his side by sleeping with her, they discover the cult might not be as extinct as they thought, and the strange dreams might actually be real.

This is a pretty nice transfer for a film from the 60s, with very good contrast, decent color, subtle grain, and fair detail. It's a little soft, and the color's not entirely natural, but it fits the period look. Dual mono track sounds fine, and the commentary track with Barbara Steele is a delight.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk lovecraft” for more fear of swarthy Italians and witches in houses, “hevk cult” for more fringe religious groups, or “hevk 60s” for more from the decade when you could just slap some colored lights and a caleidoscope effect on some shots of a dominatrix whipping someone and call it horror.
