Highlander (1986), directed by Russell Mulcahy, WeltKino 4k remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including 5.1 remaster, original theatrical stereo, three commentary tracks, RiffTrax riff commentary, and subtitles in eleven languages.
IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091203/
Video encoded in two-pass 13.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image. Audio encoded separately with Apple AAC for the highest-quality AAC sound available. Subtitles converted to VobSub and repositioned.
Note : My previous encode had a few blocking issues here and there, and this new, higher-quality WeltKino Blu-Ray, plus the addition of RiffTrax and more subtitles, makes for a good opportunity for an upgraded encode.
The ultimate 80s cult action adventure movie, directed by Australian music video director Russell Mulcahy (whose previous horror film Razorback I very much recommend), complete with immortals, swordfighting, uzis, bad guys in biker outfits, flashbacks to 16th century Scotland, and a great cast, score by Michael Kamen, and a bunch of original songs by Queen ("It's a Kind of Magic", "Who Wants to Live Forever" and "Princes of the Universe" amongst others were all recorded for this film). It also sports quite a few of those wispy, light-leak looking 80s hand-animated optical effects, and I personally am a sucker for those.
The story is of course bonkers, with a bunch of lore that's not really explained much, except the immortals have to battle until there's only one left, to get a badly-defined Prize, but it's wildly entertaining and charming, from Christopher Lambert's not great English (not to mention his Scottish accent) to Sean Connery's preening Spanish nobleman (who turns out to actually be Egyptian, for some reason). It's the always-fantastic Clancy Brown who steals the show, though, as sociopathic villain The Kurgan, who just seems to be having the time of his life, and commits the ultimate 80s sin of not caring about his hair styling or using any product at all. This is a must-have if you love 80s movies.
This Blu-Ray is based on the same 4k remaster as the Studio Canal one, but the encode is better, with more even grain retention. Generally, pretty perfect image-wise. 5.1 remaster sounds good, original stereo too, three whole commentary tracks should be more than enough, and the RiffTrax track is quite funny.
