Note : One of Cronenberg's best, but not so often seen these days, this is what I'd call an example of his transitional period, retaining elements of the body horror while moving into much more psychological character study territory, presented here in the director's preferred 1.66:1 aspect ratio. Also famous for being one of the first films to use a motion control camera to optically splice two takes of the same actor together, and it's of course Jeremy Irons' twin performances that are the star here, but the supporting actors are great too, especially Geneviève Bujold, and there's even a small appearance by Stephen Lack. Very loosely based on a true story, it's a disturbing portrait of mental illness, codependency, and addiction, mixed with the usual bodily mutations and distortions of Cronenberg.

Elliot and Beverly Mantle are twin gynecologists who run a fertility clinic together. Elliot is more confident and cynical, and seduces many of the women who come to the clinic, then passes them on to the more introverted and shy Beverly once he's done with them. When Beverly becomes attached to one of the women, and shares in her prescription drug addiction, things spin out of control when she leaves town, and he commissions surgical instruments "for operating on mutant women" and attempts to use them in surgery. Elliot follows him into addiction and insanity as they hatch a plan to surgically "separate" themselves and allow at least one of them to survive.

This is not a great looking remaster, looking like a telecine from an interpositive or similar, a bit fuzzy with crushed blacks and non-filmic saturated colors, but it's unfortunately the best version of this film available right now. The 5.1 remaster sounds good, and the three commentary tracks are, as usual with Cronenberg films, very worthwhile.

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk body horror” for more distorted and mutated bodies, “hevk psychological thriller” for more disturbing psychological studies, or “hevk canadian” for more from a country that's produced more than its share of solid horror.
