Prince of Darkness
A research team finds a mysterious cylinder in a deserted church. If opened, it could mean the end of the world.
Prince of Darkness (1987), directed by John Carpenter, StudioCanal 4k remaster, encoded in 10 bit HEVC with AAC sound, including 7.1 remaster, commentary track, and subtitles in eleven languages.
IMDb : https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093777/
Video encoded in two-pass 11.0 Mbps x265 10bit with the veryslow preset for archive quality image.
English subtitles OCRed, proofed and corrected. All other subtitles in image format converted to VobSub and repositioned, subtitles already OCRed checked and converted to SRT.
Note : The second film in Carpenter's "Apocalypse Trilogy", after 1982's The Thing, this is in my opinion one of his most undervalued films, a claustrophobic, dread-soaked nightmare about a team of scientists investigating the literal Antichrist in the form of a cylinder of swirling green liquid that's been locked in the basement of a church for centuries. Carpenter gave himself the alias "Martin Quatermass" for his writing credit (to Nigel Kneale's displeasure, apparently), and there's a lot of Kneale in this, with scientific investigation of supernatural phenomena and ancient cosmic horrors proving to be much more powerful and dangerous than anyone thought. The dream transmission people receive in the vicinity of the cylinder is a perfect visualization of subconscious signs and omens with horrible implications, and the ending is devastating. There's also Alice Cooper as a homicidal homeless man. A must.
A priest dies and leaves behind documents revealing the existence of "The Brotherhood of Sleep", a secret and powerful society within the Catholic church tasked with guarding the physical manifestation of the Antichrist, which is locked in the basement of a Los Angeles church. The priest who finds the documents contacts a quantum physicist to get his opinion, and the physicist puts together a multidisciplinary team of scientists who set up base in the church to analyze the artifact. However, over the course of a few days, they find themselves unable to leave the church because of hordes of homeless people crowding outside, vermin are attracted to the area, everyone experiences the same dream that claims to be from the future, and something starts taking over their minds and bodies one by one, apparently dead set on opening a portal to another dimension to let something or someone through.
This is another great 4k remaster, with very well managed grain, good color, excellent detail and good levels, and the 7.1 remaster sounds great too. Too bad there's only one commentary track, but it's a good one.
