The Quatermass Xperiment

Horror Science Fiction Thriller

Professor Bernard Quatermass is in charge of a rocket mission that has gone awry. They loose contact with the spaceship and have no idea how far into space it may have traveled. When the rocket crash lands they find that only one of the three occupants, Victor Carroon, is on board; the others have simply vanished. Slowly, the surviving astronaut begins to transform into a deadly creature.

Note : The very first Hammer horror film was an adaptation of a BBC TV serial written by Nigel Kneale, featuring his character Professor Bernard Quatermass, who would go on to feature in several successful TV series and films. Essentially a sci-fi body horror, while showing its age, it's tightly plotted, has some for its time quite decent practical effects, and was a huge hit with audiences, both launching Hammer Horror as a brand, and also a bunch of imitators in British cinema.

A rocket designed by Professor Quatermass crashes back to Earth, but only one of the crew of three is still on board and barely alive, the other two are nowhere to be found, although their empty space suits are still strapped into their seats. Carroon, the surviving astronaut, is catatonic but seemingly aware, and is taken to a lab for care. Film from the mission show the ship being rocked by some external force, and then the astronauts react with fear to something unseen, which causes them to pass out. It turns out Carroon is being slowly mutated into something alien by an organism that's infected him, and when his wife conspires to break him out of the lab, the only thing that stands between the alien menace and the Queen's loyal subjects is Professor Quatermass and his staunch British rationality in face of danger.

This is a pretty decent looking remaster, although grain could have been better managed, but contrast and sharpness is quite good. Soundtrack is about as it good as it gets for a film from the 50s, and the commentary track features the actual director, which is unusual for something this old. A must for fans of classic sci-fi, or of Hammer films in general.
