The 13th Floor Elevators. It is a name associated with an entire mythos conjuring up distinct images.
They have been called: "The first psychedelic band", "The first modern rock band", "The answer to the Beatles",
"The greatest band that ever was", and more. Those are heady terms for a band that only produced a clutch of singles and two proper LP's during their brief career.
They are a band whose story is so well known that it frequently overshadows their music. Their story is one shaped by a convoluted chain of events each one stranger than the next.
The saying: "Nothing moves in a straight line in the Elevator's Universe" continues to this very day. They are a band that has never been represented by a proper career retrospective. Even their core body of work has never seen a proper release.
This collection attempts to address that. For the first time, the TexasPsych YahooGroup has assembled together some of the most representative tracks from the best extant sources. It was decided to deliberately veer away from the better-known LP tracks and focus on the alternate, 45 rpm and demo versions. For the most part, any LP tracks are from the superior mono mixes (that have yet to receive a proper release on CD).
The tracks are grouped somewhat chronologically. The listener can now hear the evolution (or maybe 'progression' is the more accurate word) from the Buddy Holly influenced romps of the early cuts to the sonic mayhem of later songs like "Never Another".
This is quickly followed at the stabs for a new direction minus Tommy Hall and then minus Roky. It ends with the Elevator's symbolic swan song: the listless and trippy "May The Circle Remain Unbroken".
This collection was assembled by-the-fans / for-the-fans to be traded freely and is the first true career retrospective of this amazing band. It complies with the spirit and letter of the Federal Audio Home Recording Act (AHRA) (3)
