...The Puerto Rican migration to Harlem started in 1919 and, by the early 1940's, they were speaking English with black American inflections. Naturally, they were affected by other elements of African- American culture and music, but the flow of influence has never been just one way. Dizzy Gillespie and Bo Diddley are just two of a host of black musicians that have absorbed Latin rhythms while African-Americans flocked to the Palladium in the I950's to experience the mambo orchestras of Tito Rodriguez and Tito Puente. For a few months in 1967, when Piri Thomas' compelling autobiography was published, the quickest selling album at 'The Record Shack', the most popular black music shop in Harlem, was Ray Barretto’s seminal 'Acid'.
Since the 1940's, many dynamic fusions between the 2 musical cultures have blossomed. Like the preceding compilation "Broasted Or Fried," the musicians on "Freak Off" are predominantly Hispanic and based in New York. Although they were quite capable of recording more purer strains of Latin music, "Freak Off’ concentrates on Latin music with a conspicuous infusion of black American styles, whether that be soul, jazz or funk music.
