Wenlin is a great Chinese dictionary. it great strength comes foremost on it's database of 'Words' consisting of more then one character, including most of the four character proverbs
Normal dictionaries mostly give the meaning only of every single character. Second, most characters have a ethymology included of how the character came to be, where it originated from, and useful links to other characters who are similar or are derived of the same origen.
Also the 'Instant Lookup' where the meaning of a multiple character word, incl. the meaning of the individual characters it's made up of, on the bottom of the screen is great.
Compared with other dictionaries i've used I've found this one MOST useful by far! First it seperates different ways a character can be used quite comprehensively, it gives examples of how a character is used in example sentences, and gives a few samples of words which contain the character you're looking at.
I find the way the meaning is conveyed just makes more 'sense'!
Though it doesn't always show every possible grammatical use of a character, I know no other dictionary that does this better.

Also the ability to have Pinyin with tones and it's own internal IME =character input system (so needn't install one!) is wonderful.
The character recognition software works, but isn't the greatest one (get's it wrong if not drawn clearly), also drawing with a mouse is difficult, reccomend a touchphone or other device with a touchsensitive screen for that.

The program is completely portable, except some settings are kept in registry, to export them start regedit and look for 'wenlin' and export that branch of the registry.
