Het studioalbum 'Wake Up!' van John Legend is een samenwerking met The Roots. Na de historische en inspirerende Amerikaanse presidentsverkiezingen in 2008, wilden John Legend en The Roots ook in aktie komen en samen een single uitbrengen. Deze samenwerking liep al snel uit op het maken van een compleet album. Het resultaat is een mix van gospel, rock, reggae en hiphop invloeden. Soul liedjes uit de '60 en '70 waaronder 'Wholly Holy' van Marvin Gaye, 'Little Ghetto Boy' van Donny Hathaway, 'Hard Times' van Baby Huey and the Babysitters en 'Hang On In There' van Mike James Kirkland.
Alle tracks bevatten (nog steeds) relevante thema's als bewustzijn, betrokkenheid, hoop en verandering. Het album bevat 1 nieuw liedje, 'Shine,' geschreven door John Legend. Deze track zal te horen zijn in de aankomende documentaire Waiting For Superman, van de met een Oscar bekroonde regisseur Davis Guggenheim.
